Sending E-Mail: No Postage Required
Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to test your Netscape Mail settings by sending some simple e-mail.
Vocabulary: You should be getting familiar with the following terms as you gain experinece with Netscape. There are some important new buttons and a short-cut that will be very useful.
browser Netscape e-mail Internet
username address button Subject icon
Send icon To Mail Icon

Background Information: In the previous lesson you went to a lot of trouble to prepare Netscape Mail to send and recieve e-mail over the Internet. The information you entered allows your ISP to deliver your e-mail to you and allows you to send messages to anyone else that has a valid e-mail address.

There is a shortcut to starting Netscape Mail that you will want to begin using. Down in the right-hand corner of your screen is a tiny little envelope. If you click on that symbol, you will automatically leave the web browser and enter Netscape Mail.

The process of sending e-mail is very simple now that you have all the proper settings taken care of. All you need to know is someone's e-mail address. You don't even need a stamp!

Online Assignment: OK...it's time to send some e-mail. Soon, you will know the e-mail addresses of other students taking this class.

Depending on the version of Netscape you are using, some of the illustrations provided may look a little different than your screen. However, the same general instructions apply and you should be able to follow along. You may find it helpful to print out these instructions so you can follow along more easily. Select the Print icon on your menu bar at the top of the screen in order to make a hard copy of these instructions.

Right now you know at least two people's e-mail addresses: yours and mine (jordanb@rose.net). In this assignment you are going to send e-mail to yourself and to me. Please follow these instructions carefully. Contact me if you run into problems.

1. After you log into your Internet Service Provider (for example, Rose Net) and launch the Netscape browser, you should be look looking at a home page.
2. Down at the bottom right side of your screen, you will notice a tiny little envelope. Click on the envelope, and you will wind up in Netscape Mail.

3. In order to send mail, you select the To Mail button. It is the third button from the right on the menu bar.
4. After you select the To Mail button, the Message Composition Window appears.
You are going to enter information into the Mail To, the Subject, and the Message fields shown highlighted below.

5. To test if the Netscape Mail configuration is correct, you are going to send yourself an e-mail message. Use the Tab key on your computer keyboard to move from field to field.
  • Type your e-mail address in the To Mail Iconfield (for example, jdoe@rose.net).
  • Type a brief subject (for example, testing) in the Subject iconfield.
  • Position the cursor in Message field and type a simple message (for example, hello).
6. When you have addressed your message, entered a subject, and typed your message, you are ready to send it.

Just click on the Send iconbutton and and your message is sent.

If everything worked, you may notice a series of quick messages at the bottom of the screen in the status bar showing you what is happening while your message is being sent. If there is a problem with your configuration settings, you will receive a message telling you what you need to do. The most common mistakes involve not setting your user name or your e-mail address. If this happens to you, please refer to the previous lesson, read the documentation provided in the course handouts, or contact your Internet Service Provider's help desk.

7.
  • Next I want you to send me an e-mail message so I know you are online.
    • Type my e-mail address in the To Mail Iconfield (jordanb@rose.net).
    • Type a brief subject (for example, Hello) in the Subject iconfield.
    • Position the cursor in Message field and type me a message. Since this will be our first contact, let me know how things are going so far. Are the instructions clear? Have things worked the way I have described? Are you having any computer or software problems?
    8. In order to exit from Netscape Mail, select File from the menu bar as shown below.

    End Mail

    9. Close e-mailFrom the File menu, select the Close option (see the following example) to exit from Netscape Mail.

If you did everything right, you should be back at the Netscape browser interface viewing a home page. Explore if you like, and thenexit Netscape in the usual way.

In the next Module--Reading E-Mail--you will use your new e-mail skills to read messages other people on the Internet have sent to you.

Reading Assignment: Please read page 60 and the top part of page 61 in your PC Novice Guide to Netscape. After reading this article, answer the following questions. Now that you know how to use Netscape Mail, you can send me your answers by e-mail.
