Surfing Basics: You're not in Kansas anymore!

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is for you to gain some experience "navigating" on the World Wide Web.
Vocabulary: At this time there are only a few terms you need to become familiar with. You will use them over and over again as you gain skill using the World Wide Web. Also included are two important buttons.

Background Information: Netscape is the browser software that lets you view information and resources on the World Wide Web. Usually, any text on a home page that is underlined and highlighted in   a different color is a hyperlink. This is also sometimes called a hot spot.

You can tell if the cursor is on top of a hyperlink because the shape of the cursor changes from an arrow to a hand. If you select a hyperlink with the cursor, your browser will retireve the page from out on the World Wide Web and display it on your screen.

There are two important navigation buttons located on the tool bar at the top left of your screen: Back and Forward. These two buttons let you go backward and forward through a list of pages that you have visitied.

If there is anyone in your home who uses a remote control to jump around from one program to another, you are familiar with the term "channel surfing" as it applies to TV. Jumping quickly around from one home page to another on the World Wide Web is known simply as surfing. Your goal is to learn to navigate the World Wide Web with a purpose. Hyperlinks and the Back and Forward buttons are really all you need in order to successfully move around on the World Wide Web, but you will notice several other buttons on Netscape's tool bar. We will cover those in a latter lesson, but they are discussed in your reading assignment if you are curious about what they do.
Online Assignment: OK...it's time to venture out into cyberspace. I want you to at least explore RoseNet's home page. If you want to go beyond that, feel free to follow any hyperlink that looks interesting to you.

Try out the and buttons.

As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, "We're not in Kansas anymore!" Jumping from one hyperlink to another on the World Wide Web, you can get pretty far from your starting point before you realize it. If you get out too far and can't seem to find your way back to this page, just type in the address for the class home page (http://home.rose.net/~webclass/index.html) in the Location field at the top left of the screen, press the Enter key and you should be back in familiar territory.

Chose the hyperlink to RoseNet in this sentence to begin today's journey. Good luck, I will be curious about where you go and what you find.

Off Line Assignment: Please read pages 46-47 in your PC Novice Guide to Netscape. After reading this article, answer the following questions. Until we get into sending and receiving e-mail, you can just write your answers on paper.
1. How many navigation buttons are there in the tool bar?
2. How many sections are the navigation buttons grouped into? What is the purpose of each section?
3. A TV remote control or a VCR also have Back and Forward buttons. What are some ways that the Back and Forward buttons in Netscape Navigator are similar and different from the same buttons on a TV remote control or a VCR?

Competencies: After completing this assignment, you should have a basic familiarity with moving around the World Wide Web by selecting hyperlinks as well as using the Back and Forward buttons.
