Getting Started: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Netscape?

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is for you to begin to realize how important web browsers are for successfully using the World Wide Web.
Vocabulary: You are going to encounter some vocabulary words that may be new to you in this assignment. Many of these words are now in common use on popular television shows and in advertisements. I bet you will be surprised how many you recognize. Memorizing definitions is not high on my list of fun things to do! So for now, I want you to just watch for these words in your reading and in our discussion. You will be using them easily in conversation very soon.
browser World Wide Web Internet URL
Netscape Internet Explorer web server ISP
hyperlinks e-mail plug-ins HTML

Background Information: The software that you use to view information on the World Wide Web is called a browser. There are several different browsers available. Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer are the two most popular browsers, but more people seem to use Netscape. All of the examples you see in this class will use Netscape. If you use a different browser, your screens may look different and you may have to follow different instructions.
PC Novice Guide Everything you ever wanted to know about Netscape is beyond the scope of this class; however, everything you need to know about Netscape can be found in our "textbook"--the PC Novice Guide to Netscape. You should have received a copy of the PC Novice Guide to Netscape in your packet of introductory materials. If you didn't, please refer to the section on the Main Menu that discusses the textbook. I hate reading technical manuals as much as you do, so I think the format and content of this magazine will make learning the details of Netscape less painful.
Assignment: Congratulations! If you are reading this, you must have gotten on-line successfully. I hope that you are still excited about participating in this unique on-line class. Once we get a few fundamentals out of the way, you will be doing some amazing things.
Please read the following pages in your PC Novice Guide to Netscape.
1. Read the inside front cover--Introducing PC Novice Guide to Netscape.
2. Read pages 5-9--Standing at the Edge of Netscape.
After reading these articles, please answer the following questions. Until we get into sending and receiving e-mail, you can just write your answers on paper.
1. What are the two most common web browsers and which companies make them?
2. Who is credited with developing the World Wide Web? How old were you at the time?
3. What are some general similarities and differneces between TV and a web browser?
4. Did the articles seem biased for or against Microsoft Internet Explorer? Explain your opinion.

Competencies: What should you know and be able to do after completing this assignment? You should understand that browsers like Netscape are the key to successfully using the World Wide Web. You should also realize that two companies are going to be competing for your loyalty to their browser.
