Search Engines: Looking for Stuff in all the Right Places |
| Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to
teach you how to conduct key word searches with several common search engines. |
||||||||||||||||
Vocabulary: The vocabulary in this lesson deals
with some of the simpler concpets of search engines
|
||||||||||||||||
| Background Information: At this point, you should
have bookmarked the search engine sites mentioned in the previous lesson. When you are searching for information, it is a good idea to have a strategy--a plan--so that you don't waste a lot of time browsing through useless information. You want as many hits as you can get, but you don't want them to locate irrelevant information. Usually, you have a topic in mind and some key words or phrases to help you narrow your search. For example, imagine that your science teacher has assigned you to find out information about Sojourner, the little remote controlled rover that recently went to Mars. Regardless of wheter you use the World Wide Web or the library to look up information, you need to decide how you are going to find the information you want. That is your strategy. Are you up for a little experiement? What you happen if you used the key word Mars? A pretty broad search strategy that would get you a lot of information, but not much of it would deal with Sojourner. What if you the phrase "remote rover" instead? That is more specific, but you might also expect some useless information. Now, what if you just used the name of the rover itself? That actually seems like the most efficient strategy. One other possibility would be to use the phrase "Sojourner rover" as your search strategy. Rather than keep you in suspense, here's what happened when I submitted these four possiblities to the Yahoo search engine.

| Online Assignment: Use any one of the other six search engines
(just not Yahoo) that you bookmarked in the last lesson and conduct the
same search I did: Mars, remote rover, Sojourner, and Sojourner rover.
Report the results to me by e-mail. |

Reading
Assignment: Even though you read pages 58-59 in the PC Novice Guide
to Netscape for the last assignment, you might want to review it again
now. Many of the things mentioned in that reading assignment should be
clearer to you now. |
||||||||||||||||
| Homework Assignment: Think of a topic that you are intersted
in--anything will do. (Thinking of a topic is often the hardest part of
the assignment. Think of something related to school, a hobby, a career,
etc.) Next decide on whether to use a keyword or a phrase as your search
strategy. Then use any one of the seven search engines you bookmarked and
conduct your search. Send me the results by e-mail. |
||||||||||||||||
| Competencies: After completing this assignment, you should be
able to use keywords or phrases to conduct searches using at least two
different search engines. |
