Bookmarks: Without Bending the Pages

Objective: In this assignment you will learn how to create bookmarks that will let you return to web sites that you have visited before.
Vocabulary: Not much new vocabulary in this lesson. You have come a long way in a short time and much of the terminology associated with the World Wide Web and the Internet is becoming second nature to you by now.

Background Information: There are literally millions of home pages on the World Wide Web. As you have seen, each one has a unique URL. As you do more exploring, there are bound to be web sites that you want to return to time after time. You could try and remember the URL for each site, write down the addresses on sticky notes, or keep a list in a notebook. However, most web browsers provide you with a better solution: bookmarks.

Most of us use bookmarks for keeping track of our place in printed materials. Open up a book or a magazine to where you left the bookmark and you can start reading exactly where you left off. Bookmarks on the World Wide Web are a little different, but the same principal applies: mark your place and return to it anytime.

When you create a bookmark for a home page on the World Wide Web, you are simply telling the web browser to keep track of the URL of that web page. The browser creates a list of bookmarks that you can choose from to return to any site you have visited in the past.
Online Assignment: In this assignment you will learn how to create bookmarks and then use them to return to a web site easily. It may be helpful to print these instructions so that you can follow along more easily.

Using Bookmarks to Revisit your Favorite Sites

1. Explore the World Wide Web and find a site that you wiould like to return to in the future.
2. When you find a site that you want to return to, select Bookmarks from the tool bar menu and then choose the Add Bookmark option.

Bookmarks | Add Bookmark

This method shows you all of the bookmarks that have previously been set and gives you a clue about how to return to sites that have been bookmarked.

As usual there is a shortcut to setting bookmarks that you may want to use: Ctrl+D. If you hold down the Control Key and press the D key once (t
he Control key is usually on the bottom left side of the keyboard). The site you are visiting will be stored in the bookmark list. The only difference is that you will not see the list of other bookmarks. That comes later.

And, just when you thought it couldn't get any easier, it turns out that there is a third way to set a bookmark! If you click the right mouse button, a small pop-up window apears. Select the last option on the menu, Add a Bookmark.

3. Pretty simple, right? OK, browse some more and bookmark some other web sites. Don't worry this is only for practice and you can delete any unwanted bookmarks later.
5. So, how do you return to a bookmarked site? From the tool bar menu select Bookmarks. From the pop-up menu, select Go to Bookmarks.

Again, there is a shortcut: Ctrl+B. Hold down the Control Key and press the B key once.

Both of these methods will show you a list of bookmarks that have been set. In fact, you may see some that you know you didn't set. Where did they come from? Some bookmarks are pre-set by the publisher of the different web browsers as helpful starting points for places to visit. If you have bookmarked a lot of sites, your list may be too big to fit on one screen. In that case you'll notice at the bottom of the list an entry that says More Bookmarks. If you select that, the complete list of bookmarks becomes available in a pop-up window that you can scroll through.

To return to a bookmarked site, you just click on it from the list and the web browser automatically retrieves the web page from the URL associated with the name in the list. Beats remembering all those URL addresses or posting sticky notes all over the place! We will talk about some of the details of managing bookmark lists in a later lesson.

Reading Assignment: Please read page 72 in the PC Novice Guide to Netscape--How to Add and Organize Bookmarks.
Homework Assignment: Your homework assignment for this lesson is to find five web sites that interest you and set bookmarks for them. Send me an e-mail message with only the names of the sites. You don't need to send me the URLS, just the names of the sites.
Hot SpotThis unique site is for those of you who think that the Texas Rangers is just a baseball team!
Competencies: After completing this assignment, you should be able to set bookmarks for web sites that you visit often and use the bookmark feature to return to any site in your bookmark list..
