MUSKOGEE CREEK INDIAN FACT SHEET
1. A typical village consisted of about 125 people.
2. Each village had many clan chiefs and one
principal
chief.
3. Villages were located near a creek. The Muskogee
people
were called Creeks
be the Europeans because they lived beside
bodies
of water.
4. A typical diet consisted of corn, beans,
vegetables,
and wild meats.
5. Creek Indians worshipped the Master of Breath, who
was
called Hesaketimese.
6. They buried their dead under ground.
7. The children identified with and lived with the
mother’s
clan.
8. The adult female’s daily duties include farming,
taking
care of the children, and
preparing food. Some women would weave
garments
or work the skins for garments.
9. The adult male’s daily duties included farming,
hunting,
making pottery,
flint napping, etc…
10. Their favorite games were chunky (stick) ball.
11. A typical male’s clothing looked like leggings, breach
cloth
with moccasins. After the
Europeans came, long shirts,
sacred belts, pouches
and turbans became
part of the dress.
12. A typical female’s clothing was a small skirt of skins
or
bark. After trading with the
Europeans, the women began to
weave cotton
into cloth and they began to trade
and use homespun cotton and ribbons.
13. A typical child’s clothing was a small breach
cloth
for the boys and skirts for the girls.
14. A typical village had one garden per family and a
community
garden for the
elderly and disabled.
15. Each family had four houses built in a square,
with
each house serving a
special purpose.
16. The square was used for government, ceremonial
and
social purposes.
17. The roundhouse was for the assembling of men or
women
where they
continued their meetings and took
care
for the elderly. When the weather
was very cold or during times of
sickness.
18. Courtship before marriage lasted for a year.
19. Each town had ceremonial people to provide
counsel
and guidance to the tribe.
20. Typical family sizes varied. Historically, the
men
could have more than one wife,
and the family size often depended on
how
many wives there were. He had to be
able to afford more than one wife. In
addition,
his first wife chose all the other wives.
21. Cooking utensils were made from pottery, wood and
stone.
22. A family’s wealth was measured by the family size.
23. Rank within a clan was achieved by blood.
However,
a person could also
achieve rank through his dedication
to
the tribe.
24. Clan mothers roles included educating the young
women
in cooking,
clothing making and general care of
the
family.
25. The Muskogee were coppertone in color, and like
other
races, there were
various sizes and shapes.
26. Modes of transportation were by canoe, horse and
walking.
27. Typical weapons for war and hunting included
blowgun
bow arrow, and hatchet.
28. Names were given at birth and then at each of the
four
steps a person had to
go through in the life cycle.
29. The age of maturity was about twelve.
30. The food was stored and preserved by drying.
31. Typical dances were the stomp dance, social dance
and
story telling dance.
