Halcyon
Home is a non-profit, non-denominational charitable organization
for battered women and their children whose mission is to:
provide safe shelter and support services for victims of domestic violence,
their children, and survivors of sexual assault; promote community awareness and
education to help prevent and break the cycle of violence; provide an
environment of encouragement, compassion, and support for all those we service.
What does "Halcyon
Home" mean?
According to the American Heritage Dictionary,
a halcyon is a "fabled bird, identified with the kingfisher, that was supposed to
have had the power to calm the wind and the waves while it nested on the sea during the
winter solstice". During time the meaning has been modified to mean any calm,
peaceful situation.
Because
our mission is to help women and their children who have suffered find peace in
the midst of tumultuous lives, the word "halcyon" seemed appropriate.
